"She Said Yes"
Everyone likes a good, well planned proposal! So far, every proposal I have photographed, "She Said Yes"! Having a photographer at your planned proposal seems to be the thing to do this year. Maybe it is because people were locked down for so long during the Pandemic, they are now looking for photo documentation of special days and events. I was contacted in 2019 by a young man that was planning on proposing to his girlfriend on their vacation to Maine, and was it something I would be interested in capturing? I immediately said yes, and the day was planned. Dylan was to bring Kimmy to Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse in South Portland, Maine. I would be there, as a tourist, photographing the Lighthouse. I must say, it went off without a hitch. He led her out on the breakwater, stopped her, got down on one knee, brought the ring box out and popped the question. She was totally surprised and "She Said Yes!". She was not aware of my presence until he pointed me out. I then proceeded to take photos of the happy couple around the lighthouse and the surrounding area. All in all, a very enjoyable experience for all of us, and they loved the photos. That was my first experience with the "proposal", but certainly not my last.
Unfortunately, 2020 felt like the year that never was. I managed to book quite a few Portrait sessions in the latter part of the year, but very few couples were getting married or having a public display of proposals. Ahh, 2021 is rapidly bringing us back to normal! As a matter of fact, business has not been better than this year. In May, Max contacted the Wedding Planner that I sometimes work for, Connie of All In One Weddings, to arrange a surprise proposal at Portland Head Light, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Connie arranged to have me and a videographer at the Light House, along with Flowers and a bottle of Sparkling Cider for the couple. Max brought Paige from Schenectady, New York to propose. It was a total surprise to Paige and played out beautifully. So good, that Connie is adding this service to her web site for future couples. And, "She Said Yes!"
Only a couple of weeks later, in June, I was contacted by Ernesto to photograph his proposal to his girlfriend, Petal. This was a unique setup. Two of Petal's girl friends were flying in to Portland, Maine to start a "girls week" trip to Bar Harbor. The young ladies knew about the proposal, and how they kept it from Petal is a mystery to me. Ernesto drove from Boston to meet the ladies at Portland Head Light, to ostensibly tour the grounds and have dinner with them before they headed out on their trip north. Once again, I was to pose as a tourist photographing the Light House. I will say, Petal was completely and totally surprised. And the important thing is: "She Said Yes!" Ernesto said they would be married in Trinidad next year. That would be great if it worked into a destination wedding for me. I would love to travel to Trinidad to photograph this great couple during their wedding....
I love nothing better than photographing these couples in their happiest moments. I have another "surprise" proposal scheduled for July. It is destined to be a great day. Consider hiring a photographer for your proposal. It will be a day to remember in photographs...
